I am wondering how much expense I should plan for allowing my toy budget in order to purchase a complete shortwave radio set-up, meaning everything needed from microphone to antenna and all the equipment inbetween?

Though I will not actually be actively shopping for one to two years I am starting now with learning about which brands and systems others like using and find reliable. One old-timer I spoke with awhile back said his ancient box --which has actual red-glowing vacuum tubes in it-- is the only way to go, so I'd imagine opinions and experiences vary quite a bit regarding best equipment types, brands and models.

Doubtless there is also a price range, with an approximate lower end for the costs to expect and no upper limit depending on how ornate and elaborate one wants to get. My interest is in assembling a system which has a very long distance range (I'm in Alaska right now but it will eventually be located on the Big Island of Hawaii), allows good quality voice communication (versus Morse only), and is reliable (in the sense of not breaking down frequently and needing to be sent to the shop for diagnosis and new parts). Seems like the eventual actual cost for setting up and ongoingly using a system in any sort of undertaking (whether fishing fly-tieing or stained glass or old car restoration) is always a whole lot higher than one might naively think it will be at the outset when one is all flush with more enthusiasm than good sense, so I'd be interested to hear folks' estimates of how much to figure --bottom line-- it is going to end up costing to put together a solid and powerful shortwave set-up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for whatever comments you might share.

Reminder: ARRL Kids Day is Saturday, June 17(Jun 15, 2006) -- The next opportunity to bring Amateur Radio into the lives of young people is Saturday, June 17, when ARRL's second Kids Day of 2006 takes place. "It's their special day, so make the most of it," says ARRL Education and Technology Program Coordinator Mark Spencer, WA8SME. Kids day begins at 1800 UTC and continues until 2400 UTC. There's no limit on operating time. Suggested exchanges are first name, age, location and favorite color. Call "CQ Kids Day" to elicit contacts. "More hams are getting involved in Kids Day, and it shows," Spencer says. "Why not join in the fun and invite some kids to experience the 'magic of radio' in your shack June 17?" Sumner Weisman, W1VIV, did just that in January, and several youngsters (photo) enjoyed operating from the Framingham (MA) Amateur Radio Association's W1FY. Spencer suggests that while the kids are experiencing the fun of ham radio, their licensed mentors encourage them to pursue their own ham radio tickets. Suggested frequencies are 14.270 to 14.300 MHz, 21.380 to 21.400 MHz and 28.350 to 28.400 MHz, plus local VHF repeaters with the sponsor's permission. Licensees should observe third-party traffic restrictions when making DX contacts. These apply when unlicensed individuals communicate via ham radio. More information on Kids Day is in June QST, p 53.

Kid's Day Rules
Educational Activities: Recruitment & Education • Kid's Day Survey

Purpose: Kid's Day is intended to encourage young people (licensed or not) to enjoy Amateur Radio. It can give young people hands-on on-the-air experience so they might develop an interest in pursuing a license in the future. It is intended to give hams a chance to share their station with their children.
Dates: January 8 and June 17 2006.
CQ KID'S DAY DE WA9LGQ
Fun was the apparent result of a successful recipe--a recipe that included lots of preplanning, food, and Ham Radio. At the Indianapolis the Red Cross Chapter house, the Red Cross radio disaster group sponsored its very first Kids Day event. [Full Story]

Time: 1800 to 2400Z. No limit on operating time.
Suggested exchange: Name, age, location and favorite color. You are encouraged to work the same station again if an operator has changed. Call "CQ Kid's Day."
Suggested Frequencies: 28350 to 28400 kHz, 21380 to 21400, 14270 to 14300 kHz and 2-meter repeater frequencies with permission from your area repeater sponsor. Observe third party traffic restrictions when making DX QSOs.
Reporting: Logs and comments may be posted on the Internet. Those without Internet access may forward comments to the Boring Amateur Radio Club (address below).

Awards: all participants are eligible to receive a colorful certificate (it becomes the child's personalized sales brochure on ham radio). You can download this certificate for free, customized with the kids' names, after filling out our Kid's Day Survey, or send a 9 X 12 SASE to: Boring Amateur Radio Club, PO Box 1357; Boring, OR 97009. More details may be obtained by joining the Kid's Day Reflector.

The antenna arrived yesterday and it appears to be well made. I plan on putting it on a ' 20ft painters pole' and then making a base that can be used when I am parked. by slipping the base under the rear tire, and slipping the pole into a piece of pipe. The antenna is available from w5ncd and he own's Bosque Communications. Do a search and you will find his GP2 antenna. www.w5ncd.com 73s..

Well, since EVERYONE has had a different experience with antennas... I thought I'd pose the question anyway.

I recently bought a Butternut multi-band HF vertical for my home station but i'm having second thoughts about putting it up because most hams i've talked have told me tuning is a MAJOR issue with these type of antennas, as is the need for LOTS of radials in order to get them to function properly on all the bands they're designed for. I don't really have the lot space for the radials so that is going to be a problem.

I DO however, have trees! So, I think I'm going to purhcase a G5RV dipole tomorrow while i'm at HRO in Oakland. Most hams I've talked to have told me they've had very good results over all with these and i've heard plenty of them on the air now too.

I'd like some feedback from any of you "Elmers" out there.

You see everyone can have a spot in ham radio. My question (s) like more into the can and cannot departments. We seem to have a lot of cannots.. everyone knows someone in that field. I cannot learn this, I cannot fix this, I cannot --put your own here.
Folks and fellow hams. We cannot put a man on the moon. (Sorry Wayne, I believe we have) and yet because of technology we did. Hams were in the developement of radio before most people could spell it. I went to electronics school in Memphis, Tenn. On the wall was a small notice. "in this building there is no such word as can't or always!"
Have all the experimentation died? I notice even in QST there might be one or two articles to build, CQ mag about the same. I know they have to have the article first but what about the ideas for projects. I saw a newsletter fro qrp and there were a half dozen projects.. yes of course it was cw but who says it has to be.. My radio. IC736 is unable to remove a powerline noise for me, I have no expertise in noise projects but I bet there is someone out there that has and perhaps built a small, simiple answer. When I had my Swan 350, I built a noise clipper for it. got it from the pages of 73 mag, it worked great, just two resistiors, two diodes and a 9 volt battery.. it worked clipping the magnitude of the audio signals.. no more crashing in my earphones. Not very technical you say, perhaps but for me it was a super answer and a great projects. I built my first PSK interface, it was a blast, now I use a Rascal from Buck Rogers. But Because of someone else I built it. A friend made a code key from a putty knife,,works..
Now I am asking, is there more articles out there that could be published for building.. Have you built something that works for you? Can you make a box that will move my audio from one ear to the other as a time delay, I think my brain will sort out the noise and elimate it.
Don't like morse code, how about another way to communicate. Is there a magnitic shift of energy that can be used.. I don't know, All I want to make in a point, stop complaining about cannot and lets try can do.
A lot of good knowledge is dying off every year, its time for harvest my fellow hams. Throw me a tidbit, even if it is for someting I don't use right now. JR.

I have question for some of you experienced with code. When learning the procedural signs "Break" & "End Of message" is it best to translate them as the letters OR the = and + symbols? Since I've started translating the other signs as the letters SK and KN I wanted to make sure that I learn a correct method so that I don't have to re-teach myself.
It's really a poor design and I didn't even know what the inside connection was until I opened it up. The dark area is apparently where the spring got a little toasty. If you're running any power at all, you'll want to stay away from these kind of connections in favor of using a cable.

I've been looking around for new digital amateur radio hardware and here's what I've found so far:

Alinco has a few radios out: DR-620 VHF+UHF, DR-135MKII mobile/base and the DJ-596 & DJ-593MkII VHF/UHF hand helds.

Of course these require "optional digital cards" and Alinco is using some format of digital which is a point of much confusion in my mind. Mainly the confusion is due to this link:http://jn1jdz.ampr.jp/20F3/ From what I can gather there were perhaps older digital option cards that used 20F3 (the EJ-40U/43U for the DR-135 and DR-145 radios). After a bit of digging it seems this format was based on the established ITU-TV.32 protocol.

Apparently the 20F3 format is incompatible with 10F3 which seems to be the format of the new digital option cards (EJ-47U) used in the DR-620 and the latest series of Alinco digital ready radios.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to become another one of those format wars? It's like digital TV only worse ;-)

http://www.alinco.com/usa.html

AOR has an interesting box ARD9800 that allows you to run digital using your old analog radio. AOR is using AMBE2020 and DQPSK and apparently is compliant with the G4GUO open digital protocol (yet another format). Seems like a pretty cool box which allows for video/image to be sent as well.

Then there is the new Icom system named D-STAR. This appears to be a pretty impressive and thought out communications network, however it is 1.2 GHz and up due to the high speed data integration. Check it out.
Has anyone heard of any other released or in production products? Is anyone even interested in digital at this point?
