hi...new around here, no license yet

my thing is offshore sailing..but i'm also a nostalgic technophile with a thing for lo-tech and oldschool gear

not much electricity just a solar panel...i was thinking of getting an old reciever for weather time and some of the marine ssb nets....thought i would try getting into CW as a low power way of getting the odd message back relayed back home through a ham with email access....use the backstay as an antenna

any marine mobile radio folk out there??

    Hey,

my only mobile marine is when i have my Kenwood HT with me on the Zodiac! If you're thinking of some low power stuff... have you thought of packet maybe? or APRS?

QRP rigs such as a CW 40m rig would also work well, esp with a 12v battery charged w/solar.

All of this depends on how far out you plan on sailing offshore?
    Like transpac races?? or different?

      hey moose..

i'm hoping to sail a long ways, (maybe even right around ?), but it's going to be another two years before i start

i know folks who do the whole email connection by radio out there (is that packet?)

maybe it's wierd but i don't want to stay too hooked up to the world...i think i'd lose my peace of mind....and i don't have a lot of cash to put into the radio gear

i think i'm really interested in learning morse and going the CW route...i'd like to make some of my own gear if there are some good kits out there....any idea what kind of current a 40m transmitter draws?

        Right on!

        Yup... sounds sorta like packet.

www.tapr.org/tapr/html/pkthome.html has a buncha info on packet as well as APRS (automated packet reporting system).... which is basically packet, w/GPS reporting, using a GUI.

as far as 40m QRP CW rigs... depends on the kit & rig. ARRL.org might have some info on the various kits...

QRP stands for low power, and if you do a search for QRP, you'll come across several kits, and clubs in the area.

I'll check with my brother to see what his qrp 40m kit pulls and how long his batteries last on it.

        later,
