Re: Morse code tutoring software for pc
Sat, May 8, 2004 - 12:16 PMGet your hands on a shortwave receiver with a BFO.
Listen to the W1AW code practice sessions from
the ARRL. They usually send straight text from
<QST> magazine.
---
Also, listen to "live" QSOs on the air. Many stations
send at slower speeds, now that the code requirement
is 5 WPM for General and Extra Class licensees.
---
Good luck!

Re: Morse code tutoring software for pc
Tue, May 11, 2004 - 8:35 PMI found a shareware program called CW Player. It has been very helpful. I found some of the W1AW practice sessions on the ARRL website in mp3 format. Between the two I have learned almost all my characters already! A few letters are still giving me some trouble but i'm learning pretty quickly I think.
I just bought a practice key today (am having fun with it!). I've tried to copy some QSO's off the air but most of them are still a little too fast for me...but I AM starting to pick out letters here and there.
My goal is to be ready to take my test by my next birthday (which is at the end of July). I ordered the study material for the General Class License but i'm not sure i'll be up to speed on my electronics theory by then. I may have to start out with a Tech + ticket at first. But, that would be ok i guess.
Thanks for all your help Loren! Hopefully we'll get to QSO soon!

Attaboy! Hang in there. "XYZ" at the end of the alphabet
are "hard" ones when one is learning the code at first.
Also, punctuation marks like the comma
(dahdahdididahdah) and the question mark
(dididahdahdidit) take some getting used to. But soon
they will becom old pals and "old hat".
A great code practice oscillator is the one that MFJ
makes. It operates on a 9-volt battery, and comes
with a small speaker, headphone jack, volume and
tone controls--as well as a built-in practice key.
A guy brought one to our last radio club meeting
(West Valley Amateur Radio Association, W6PIY),
and I was drooling over it. :-)
<www.qrz.com> has sample written tests, as does
our club, <www.wvara.org>. If you start passing
these online sample tests consistently, you stand
a good chance of passing the actual test.
Hope we have a chance to have a QSO.
I'm on 20M QRP CW and 2M FM via the repeaters.

Re: Morse code tutoring software for pc
Thu, May 13, 2004 - 4:48 AMThat's the key I bought the MFJ-557. I like it very much.
I'm already passing the qrz practice tests (from the Tech question pool) consistently with a score of 80% or higher so I think I'm just about ready for the element 2. I've got the general class study material on its way in the mail but i'm not sure how long it'll take me to learn. I'm having real trouble with electronics theory so I may have to start with the Tech + at first.

PS. My browser(netscape) wouldn't let me access the mvara.org site for some reason. -

Re: Morse code tutoring software for pc
Thu, May 13, 2004 - 10:08 PMYou can download the entire question pool for any
given license class from the ARRL Web site,
<www.arrl.org>. That is how I studied for my Extra
test back in 2001 (I upgraded from Advanced).
The West Valley site is <www.wvara.org>. You may
have typed the URL incorrectly. Give it another try.

Fri, May 14, 2004 - 2:58 AMI was aware of this but I thought it'd be good to have the books for reference material afterwards.

Re: MORSE CODE.. TRY NuMORSE.
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 5:02 AMthe AA9PW website was a godsend! I don't know if i would have passed at the time without it. GREAT website for learning code, at least I thought so.
So yes, I passed my code exam back in Novemember (posted this in one of the other threads i think). Unfortunatley, due to some trying personal cercumstances, I was only able to get radios about a month ago. I JUST got my base station up last week with one antenna for 2 meters/440. My HF wont be up for another few weeks still (can hardly wait for that!) Having a blast so far!
