Anyone know how I could turn my Linux distribution into a ham radio using the built in 'HAM RADIO' kernel module?
I've noticed the module, but, I'm not sure what hardware I'd need in order to make it work.
I think it'd fun to set up.

Re: HAM Radio on LINUX
Sat, January 3, 2004 - 5:14 PMEven though there is a convergence of computer and
radio technologies, piggy-backing radio communication
onto the computer network (wired) and then decoding
from the compunet back to radio is almost like using
modems on each end of a telephone line, or
AD/DA converters--not true radio communication.
True radio communication is wireless, end-to-end.
If we accept this definition, then our current use of
VHF FM repeaters is O.K.--it's still wireless. Now if
the compunet is wireless, that might fit the definition.
It wouldn't matter what the OS is: Linux, UNIX,
Solaris, Windows (Horrors!), etc. :-) -

Re: HAM Radio on LINUX
Mon, January 5, 2004 - 10:21 PMWell, I wouldn't exactly think so. I was figuring there was a PCI card.
If you had a PCI radio card with an antenna... you don't need a network, the computer wouldn't need a MODEM or even a NIC in that case.
It'd virtually make a HAM station, that could, um, do alot more then just HAM ;-) -

Re: HAM Radio on LINUX
Tue, January 6, 2004 - 10:17 PMMost computer motherboards have a real-time clock
circuit, and also a crystal-controlled oscillator. Why
bother with a PCI card peripheral? Just hard-wiring
an antenna to the oscillator circuit, and keying the
oscillator will yield a QRP CW transmitter, The next
trick will be to leverage off of existing motherboard
circuitry, and turn it into a receiver. Voila! A ham
radio transceiver made from a computer. How's that
for reverse engineering? :-) Hmm, come to think of it,
maybe I can use <grep> and <chmod> for something here.

Re: HAM Radio on LINUX
Mon, April 5, 2004 - 12:17 PMnow that would be a pretty cool mod, be talking on the radio and surfing the net from the same machine.....that would be something to look into. New line of Motherboards.. Ham Radio compatible. -

Re: HAM Radio on LINUX
Sun, June 6, 2004 - 10:29 AMYears ago I remember someone trying to make a ham radio from a c-64 commodore computer.. Might have worked but it was mostly a dream. You're right, so come on readers, how about a qrp radio txrx from a computer totally. There are radios that are completely controlled by your computer and there are SSTV generators that reside within the computer but not stand alone without external radios. Think you have something here. wb7wvo jr

Re: HAM Radio on LINUX
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 8:45 PMI think the HAM RADIO modules are mostly AX.25 (amateur packet radio) stuff --- they assume you have a modem and a radio already, and they do the higher layers of the network stack.
For hardwareless radio you could try www.erikyyy.de/tempest/ which essentially uses your video card as a software-defined-radio transmitter. Transmit only, though. :-)

Thu, October 26, 2006 - 9:45 PMHaha, I am about to get my ham radio license, and I forgot that there was that option in Linux!

This link should get you in the right direction. It's called the Internet Radio Linking Project. They all use Linux. They also have a yahoo group to help solve problems.

Fri, November 10, 2006 - 11:38 AMOOPS!!! I read what you were asking wrong... Still. If you are not aware of IRLP, it's a very cool network. I get some of the oddest places here in Omaha via 70cm. -
