How many of you folks on this tribe have ham radio license plates on your car or truck? What are the pros of having them? The cons?

My dad has one I don’t. I would like to get one. Plus here in Colorado it’s only $2 extra to get it.

    Pros:
    1. Other hams on the road can spot you. Like the antenna on the car wasn’t enough.
    2. Other Hams can call you by your call sign. Many local hams also place the frequency they listen to on the back windshield.
    3. It looks so cool next to all the other ham cars at the local ARC meeting or Field day.
    4. Being a Skywarn participant, the plate makes it easier to explain what you're doing parked on the hill, on a dark and stormy night.

    Cons:
    1. I makes it easier for non hams to look you up if they know how.
    2. The local radio car thief would know which cars might have a nice costly radio in the. Again if the antennas doing give it away.

Of course, for con #2 to matter, said thief would have to be aware that ham radio even exists *sigh*

$14 in NY, IIRC. I don't have one, but I had thought about it. A number of my friends have them.... KB2NEA and W2BEJ come immediately to mind.

Actually, a few years ago when KB2NEA got his plate, he emailed me a pic of his Subaru Impreza sporting it and about three antennas. The subject of the email said, "Okay, I am now über geek." He is a computer geek, also (as am I) and a professional video geek.

        The antennas help that along.

"Okay, I am now über geek."

Don’t think of it like that. Think of it as a community service.

Well, the nice thing about #2 these days is that rigs have gotten a lot smaller. Both rigs I take mobile, the TM-261 and the TS-130 come out pretty easily (hint--use quick disconnects on the coax connectors).

My problem has always been remembering to take the antennas off before I go somewhere with parking garages.

Yes, Same here. I have one of those nice slide mount plate. It comes right out. Rigs like the IC-706 have the face plate that comes of so the bulk of the radio can be place under a seat.

Antennas and fast food is also a bad combo.

I am glad you asked this. My dad has it on his truck and has never had any problems (77" Chevy and got it in 78"). And I would like to get it on my new car when I pass the test. But that #2 Con is soooo true. I have had my old car broken into twice. But also true, despite the Radio Clubs in the area, I don't know how many people actually know about them. LOL But also a problem is the fact they can look you up. I don't want unsolicited mail or comments on a QRZ website, especially being a woman! (I changed my dad's photo recently, he hasn't noticed hehe). I kinda want to get a Vanity Call sign or use my dads when he passes. I memorize his since I began talking, now having my own...I hope I can memorize it. :)

Well, it took a full 4 months from Nov. 2005 to March 2006 until I got my ham plates from California DMV. It may seem like an anomaly, but I have ham plates on a car that has no ham equipment--or any kind of radio at all installed. My car is a base model with stick shift, hand-crank windows, and no air conditioning. My feeling is ham radio is something I do at home, not while driving. Driving a stick shift car means paying attention to driving, not B.S.-ing like some lid on a cellphone. At ham radio club meetings, Field Day, etc. it's neat to see all the vehicles with ham plates. As to spam e-mail, you don't need ham plates to receive it! Also, it's not just the "qrz.com" database; the dedicate snoop can find out almost everything about everyone given enough persistence and expertise. Anonymity is nearly impossible in an age of "computerism." As to vanity call signs, it seems that almost 50% or more of 1x3 callsigns are vanity callsigns of newly minted Technicians--rather than original calls of oldtimers. Such 1x3s now signify this, increasingly, rather than longevity. The newly writted "omnibus" ruling by the FCC may permit the bequeathing of a callsign between family members. So the options increase to fulfill most desires.

I drive a stick shift, and a car. I don't know if I will put any equipment in my car yet. So this is something to think about. You made me think of something I will need to ask the local police department or club radio station. In California there will be a hands-free law for cell phones, but will that include Ham Radios?
Four months is a long time to wait BTW.

I just joined this tribe. So Hello Everyone! I also have the plates. I don't think the general public know's anything about looking up addresses. I don't drive in a way to make me worry about that anyway. I did think about that before I got the plates though. Maybe they keep me more honest when in a hurry. The only thing I have in there is a hidden rig with a detachable display. If someone did a smash and grab, I guess they get a useless 70 dollar mic.

There is one additional benefit to the ham plates. The cops have several different databases of plates, and the method to check a ham plate is rather obscure -- most parking wardens don't know how. So, very often, you will get a parking ticket and it will never show up on your record...
