  Sometime a someone will put up a Inet gateway on packet radio that can access the internet. This used to be a big thing in my area, one land, but because of spam and other unsolicted messages, we have dropped this feature in this area. It just took to much time to monitor. but if u get a copy of MFNOS or JNOS you can implement a packet radio to inet using a PC. hope this helps. 73 - ka1cqd

    Thanks. My friends in Seattle talked about it back in the mid 90s and said it was super slow. I am going to be doing some work in the Middle East, and thought it my be a cheaper than internet access via a sat phone.

      You can run TCP/IP with the right gear, and that would give you theoretical access to the internet, but remember, you can only do 1200 baud on 2 meters, and 9600 on 440, and that's also assuming you've got a good link, and a low probability of packet collisions. I'm not sure either speed would be sufficiently enough for even e-mail purposes.

        That is what I was afraid of. Might as well just go with the sat phone internet hook up. . . But it might be fun to try.

          I tried using it (TCP/IP) with my old DRSI board when I used to live back in New England, and even with a lot of nodes on, it was painfully slow--in fact, it was worse than using packet cluster, which is more of a broadcast method.
          
          It did provide some interesting insights as to how the whole thing works in the real world, though.

            Warren is correct, it was slow and i would not be on a packet radio network in the mid-east that is linked to the internet. But i don't know about being slower than a packet cluster but it is not much faster :-)
