I am interested in studying radio. Is there anywhere that offers an associates degree?

It's a big field. I guess the question to ask would be what is your goal. As they ask the kids, what do you want to be when you grow up?

I'm assuming you're looking at becoming a two-way radio tech.

I can't recommend a school, but I might suggest a degree to ask schools about. I think the best match would be for you to persue an Electrical Engineering degree. I'd ask if the particular school has the ability to offer a concentration in radio electronics.

It might be a tad crammed to fit a concentration into an AS schedule, though. Perhaps you would consider going for a bachelor's degree? If four years is too much time, the compromise would be to get a BT (Bachelor of Technology) in Electrical Engineering.... That's a three-year degree and some community and junior colleges offer them.

BTW, the fact that you are alread a ham can't hurt matters any. It opens the door to all kinds of experimentation. If you want the most out of your degree, you have to experiment with the stuff you learn, plain and simple.

    Good Luck.

I am interested in radio waves, electronics and making my own transmitters and receivers.

Yep, that was what I had figured. I'm pretty sure it would call for an EE program if you were wanting to do it formally.

Another thought, too, regardless of whether or not the degree is your goal.... you might try doing some kit building. The good kits will explain the theory as well as the how-to. I've learned a lot that way.

Cool. I am working in Iraq another year, so it will be a while before I can go to school. I have some plans to do art work with this knowledge, not anything really practical. . .So I don't need a degree. ..

All right, then. Good luck and be safe.

(BTW, your profile still lists you as being in Afghanistan).

I lived there the last 10 months, with the exception of June, when I was in Baghdad. I just flew back to Iraq on the 20th. I am in Mosul until the 1st, then down to Iskandariyah.

Also, look at the ARRL web site. They have classes of some kind there. I am not sure if they are transferable or not.

As Glenn said good luck stay safe.
